Millennials vs Gen Z

It’s time to talk about a new generation--Gen Z. They are still small in the workplace but don’t rule them out. Gen Z are like Millennials in a lot of aspects but there are key differences to how they work in the professional world. Millennials, 1980 and 1995, remember the time of landlines and dial up Internet whereas Gen Z, born after 1995, seldom remembers a time before smart-phones and social media.

Here are the top ways Millennials and Gen Z differ in the workplace:

Work Space

Millennials are known for the open workspace phenomenon. Gone were private offices and instead floating desks. Gen Z prefers having their own space to work. They want to go back to private offices.

Communication

Millennials have been known to text and email everything. They think it’s a more efficient way to get things done. Gen Z would rather have a face-to-face meeting.

Money

Millennials are known for wanting experiences. Money doesn’t matter as much if they enjoyed their experience. Gen Z cares more about money and saving. They grew up during the recession and therefore would rather save for hardships.

Competition

Millennials are more team focused. They believe they are getting critiqued as a team and that is what matters. Gen Z is more individual focused and believes they are getting critiqued on what they did and not the team.

Idealistic vs Pragmatic

Millennials focus on the big ideas and the end game rather than how they are going to make something happen. Gen Z thinks practical. They will do whatever they think necessary to get the job done.
